Virtual Try-On: Three Best Examples in eCommerce

Virtual Try-On

Virtual try-on is a possibility to select a suitable product by placing things on a buyer’s personal photo, on a store model, or in real-time using the camera on the customer’s device.

Online fitting rooms have long been conducive to the benefits of companies, they have especially become relevant in the current circumstances of lockdowns. That said, online try-on makes its positive mark by minimizing product returns and loss of leads.

In this article, we will discuss the three examples from various spheres of online, built on customer interaction with a virtual try-on service.

Top eCommerce Cases of Implementing Virtual Try-On

In 2017, the augmented reality market was valued at $3.5 billion, but by 2025, it will reach an impressive $198 billion. To provide engaging unified customer service experiences, 46% of retailers plan to deploy AR or VR solutions in the near future.

Virtual try-on is essential for marketing and sales as it offers shoppers a realistic, personalized product presentation in seconds. Whether it’s a smart mirror in a physical store or a mobile app, customers can instantly check out dozens of products and even get product recommendations.

This contributes to increased sales and customer satisfaction as well as it is a valuable source of information. You can track which products are selling the most and reduce the cost of returning items. Buyers, in turn, make purchasing decisions easier because they have an idea of how the product fits them.

Now let’s take a closer look at how actual online businesses have successfully implemented this technology into their sites.

1. Furnishing Stores

A French designer and retailer of high-quality furniture and home accessories, Roche Bobois, offers an innovative take on relaxation and comfort. The company provides customization and visualization of the Mah Jong sofa in 3D and with the use of augmented reality.

It all started with the moment when back in the 1970s, designer Hans Hopfer created the Mah Jong sofa, consisting of three basic elements.

They can be combined in any way, constituting an armchair, sofa, relaxation area according to your preferences. To embark on your journey, you need to go to the app marketplace on your smartphone and download the Mah Jong Sofa native application.

It is worth noting that this is not very convenient, since the size of the application is 63.2 MB for iOS. Potentially, a savvy solution would be to switch to a Magento PWA, which doesn’t require installation and offers the highest page loading speed possible both for mobile and desktop browsing.

So, after downloading the application, the 3D figure of the sofa appears at your fingertips, which can be seen on the screenshot below. The sofa mockup can be rotated in any direction and take a variety of colors and shapes, gradually attaching more new elements.

After customizing the sofa to suit your needs, you can switch on the camera and point to the area where you would like to “try on” the model of the sofa. This is especially handy for users who wish to visualize how the item of furniture will look in their interior. Then you can save, archive, and share your artwork.

2. Jewelry Stores

Another illustration where you need to download an app to try a product on is the jewelry brand Bensimon. To find it, you either need to search for it in the iOS app store, or go to the site and select “By Bensimon”, and then “Ring Finder App”. Note that the size of the native application is also quite large and it will take a while to wait for the download.

Anyway, the application launches and offers the user three categories, depending on the event. You can take a picture of your hand and place different rings to check how they look on your fingers. The result can be sent by clicking on the “Share” button. You can check out on the screen capture below how it looks in real life.

3. Beauty Care Stores

On the NYX cosmetics brand website, you can play around with different types of online try-on. To get to the cherished “fitting room”, you need to proceed to the product catalog. Bear in mind that the product photo must be marked by the “Try it on” phrase.

Make headway to the product page where you can see two buttons under the product photo. One of them leads to online fitting; the other one allows you to get online help from a cosmetic specialist.

Let’s leave the last function for later so that you can evaluate the quality of the service provided yourself, and we in turn will focus our endeavors on the try-on feature.

You can get to the fitting in another way by clicking on the “Virtual Try-On” button in the lower right corner of the screen, scroll down a little, and again press on the pink “Try It On” button with a mirror.

So, the site offers us three types of try-on, as shown below: try-on in augmented reality mode with a live camera, or by uploading a photo, or choosing a model. Let’s pick the third option and the desired model.

Here you can view the product individually or settle upon a ready-made look created by the experts. If there is no product left in stock, you can click the “Notify Me” button to know when it is available again.

As you can see, NYX approached the customer experience responsibly and provided various types of fittings in its online store so that visitors could immerse themselves in shopping as much as possible and not encounter any inconvenience.

Wrapping Up

In drawing things to a close, we looked at three completely diverse examples of online try-on. We showcased a furniture brand and a jewelry manufacturer that both showed how you can complement reality using a camera and 2D and 3D product models. In the case of the cosmetics manufacturer, we used a standard model that the site owners uploaded before.

Obviously, this kind of shopping is not yet able to compare with the physical one. Most existing apps don’t guarantee that your clothes or shoes will fit well. The most functional and really useful are 3D models that convey reality to the fullest extent, allow you to combine things, or ascertain if the product suits you.

Many major market players are gradually introducing this feature into their online stores, receiving plenty of bonuses from collecting information about customer preferences to ensuring client satisfaction.
